Lesson 2 of 41, The Calling
Posted, and Already His
Before we go one step further into what it costs to stand your watch, stop. Because if you are the kind of man who is drawn to a thing like this, you are also the kind of man who will turn it into a whip for your own back, and I will not hand you the whip.
Hear this and let it go all the way down. You are not on this wall to earn your place in the family. You are already in it. If you are in Christ, your standing with God is settled, finished, paid for, and it does not move one inch based on how you perform on watch tonight.
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1
Now. No condemnation now, before you have stood a single good shift, on your worst night, with the gate you were supposed to guard hanging open. That is the ground you stand on. Not "God will accept me if I watch well." God has already accepted you in Christ, and out of that settled acceptance you go stand your watch.
Get the order right or everything in this program will poison you. You do not stand the watch to get posted. You were posted by grace and secured by the cross. You stand it as a son who has been handed a job by a Father who is not going anywhere, not as a hired man auditioning to keep his place. A watchman on God's wall is family before he is ever useful.
Why does this matter so much that I am spending a whole lesson on it before we even start? Because here is what happens to the man who gets it backward. He stands his watch to prove he belongs. So every time he fails, and he will fail, he does not just miss a shift. He hears "you are out." He reads a bad night as evidence he was never really in. And a man carrying that does not stand taller, he quits, because who can bear a post where one failure means you lose everything.
That is not the gospel, and it is not this program. Hear the truth instead. A watchman who falls asleep on God's wall does not get discharged from the family. He gets woken up, corrected, maybe corrected hard, and put back on the wall. The correction is real. We are going to do plenty of it. But it happens inside a security that never once comes up for review. You belong. That is not the prize for watching well. It is the reason you can.
So carry this into every hard thing I am about to say to you. When I tell you to wake up, to stop hiding, to guard the thing you have been neglecting, none of it is you earning your way onto the wall. You are already on it, already His. The tough love sits on top of a love that is not tough at all, that is settled and safe and yours. Now, from there, and only from there, let's talk about why you have been asleep.
